AI Agents Get Crypto Keys Through Base MCP Gateway
Base, an Ethereum Layer-2 network, has made a significant stride in the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with cryptocurrency management. The company's Model Context Protocol (MCP) gateway has been launched, enabling AI agents such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor to connect directly with users' smart wallets.
The MCP system uses a non-custodial design, meaning the server never accesses users' private keys. Authentication is handled through OAuth 2.1, a secure protocol commonly used in login systems. Every transaction requires explicit user approval through the Base Account interface, reducing the risk of phishing attacks.
The launch partners for MCP include Uniswap, Morpho, Moonwell, Aerodrome, Bankr, Avantis, and Virtuals. These companies provide 'skill plugins,' modular capabilities that can be invoked by compatible AI clients. This approach standardizes how AI agents interact with different DeFi protocols, making it easier to expand the ecosystem without Base needing to build every integration itself.
