Treasury Secretary Labels Crypto Executives Resisting Clarity Act as 'Nihilists'
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has sparked a heated debate in the crypto community with his recent remarks on the Clarity Act. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed and testimony before the Senate Banking Committee, Bessent labeled crypto executives resisting the bill as 'nihilists' who prefer no regulation over the existing legislation.
Bessent argued that the GENIUS Act, signed into law by President Trump last year to regulate stablecoins, has proven that legislative progress is possible. He emphasized that the Clarity Act is a necessary next step and called on Congress to 'finish the job'.
The bill remains stalled due to disagreements between crypto companies and the banking industry over whether stablecoin holders can earn yield on their holdings. A bipartisan compromise proposed last month bans passive yield while allowing activity-based rewards, but it has yet to gain broad support.
