Cryptocurrency links revealed in Russian and Iranian drone purchases
A recent study by Chainalysis has shed light on the intersection of cryptocurrency and military procurement. The report found that groups linked to Russia and Iran are using digital assets to fund the purchase of drones and related components.
The blockchain data used in the analysis enabled investigators to trace transactions from wallets associated with drone developers or paramilitary groups to vendors operating on e-commerce platforms. This visibility into procurement pathways is a significant advantage, according to Andrew Fierman, head of national security intelligence at Chainalysis.
Fierman noted that once a vendor has been identified, the blockchain provides a clear picture of counterparty activity and intent behind the purchase. Researchers were able to match cryptocurrency transactions with exact price points of drones and components listed online, providing a detailed understanding of procurement activities.
