Brazil Stablecoin Debate Rages On Amid Calls for Clear Regulation

Brazil is at the center of a heated debate over stablecoin regulation. A public hearing was called by Rapporteur Jadyel Alencar to consider Bill 4308/2024, which aims to regulate the status of stablecoins in the country.

The cryptocurrency industry in Brazil is opposing the bill's proposal to classify stablecoins as electronic money. Abcripto, the main crypto industry association in Brazil, has argued that this would introduce uncertainty and regulatory conflicts. They believe stablecoins should be under the oversight of the central bank but remain classified as digital assets.

Abcripto President Julia Rosin stated, 'Our contribution seeks to offer technical support for the improvement of the project, preserving legal certainty, innovation, and Brazil’s ability to compete in an increasingly internationalized market, without compromising user protection and adequate regulatory oversight.'
