Altcoin Investors Abandon Ship: Will They Regret It?
Altcoin investors have had a reputation for reaping massive returns in the past, but also for losing significant sums of money. However, research suggests that very few altcoins outperform Bitcoin over the long run.
A study by CoinGecko found that millions of cryptocurrencies launched since 2021 are already extinct, with only a handful of new major cryptos emerging. The majority of these failed projects were pump-and-dump scams.
Investors who have tried to accumulate altcoins through dollar-cost averaging (DCAing) often end up buying at inopportune points and underperforming Bitcoin. In fact, even when choosing a handful of other altcoins, the result is nearly always the same: Bitcoin up, and the rest underwater.
For most investors, it's likely that buying and holding Bitcoin will yield better results than investing in altcoins. However, this doesn't mean that everyone should abandon altcoins altogether. Those who have already done their research on specific altcoin theses and have a diversified traditional financial portfolio may still find value in these investments.
