IMF Appoints Silvana Tenreyro as Chief Economist
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has appointed Silvana Tenreyro as its new Economic Counsellor and Head of Research. Tenreyro, a British-Argentine economist, is a professor at the London School of Economics with a PhD from Harvard. She brings extensive experience to the role, having served on the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee and held positions at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.
Tenreyro will play a key role in shaping the IMF's research agenda, particularly regarding cryptocurrencies. The IMF has been vocal about crypto regulation, including urging countries against granting Bitcoin legal tender status and publishing analysis on the risks of crypto adoption in developing economies.
Georgieva noted Tenreyro's previous role on the IMF's External Advisory Group as evidence she understands the institution's inner workings. Tenreyro's appointment is effective immediately, following her reappointment to the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee for a second term in 2020.
