Michigan Bill Tackles Crypto Mining Expansion Concerns

A legislative piece introduced in Michigan seeks to address growing concerns about energy consumption and electrical grid stability in relation to cryptocurrency mining operations.

The bill, House Bill 5882, grants municipalities explicit authority to temporarily halt construction of mining facilities and data centers. The proposed moratoriums can last for up to six months, with a possible one-time 90-day extension under justification.

Local governments would also be allowed to transfer the expenses of environmental impact and infrastructure studies directly to developers.

The legislation aims to strengthen zoning powers of local government units by establishing a framework for evaluating environmental effects before authorizing commercial works. Data from legislative tracking platforms indicates that this law could serve as a roadmap for local governments to block or condition constructions that do not meet sustainability standards.

The proposal is currently under review by the Government Operations Committee and has sparked interest among at least 19 communities in Michigan, which have already attempted or approved suspension measures independently. The future of cryptocurrency mining in the region remains contingent on the decision of this committee.
