Google Warns of Quantum Threat to Crypto Security: Millions of Bitcoins at Risk
Google's latest research on quantum computing has shed light on a pressing concern for the crypto community: the potential vulnerability of blockchain security to quantum threats.
The report, conducted by Google Quantum AI, reveals that approximately 6.9 million Bitcoins could be susceptible to quantum attacks in the future. This estimate is based on the presence of older wallet formats, specifically Pay-to-Public-Key (P2PK) wallets, which were used during Bitcoin's early days.
The design choice behind these wallets has now become a problem, as public keys are permanently visible, making it easier for a future quantum attacker to access private keys without requiring any new activity. This scenario could potentially expose dormant coins, including some believed to belong to Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin's enigmatic creator.
