UK Targets Russian Shadow Financial Networks with Sanctions
The UK government has taken a significant step in its efforts to disrupt Russia's invasion of Ukraine by imposing sanctions on Russian-linked cryptocurrency platforms and financial networks.
The measures, announced by the UK Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper, include freezing assets and prohibiting UK firms from processing payments related to these networks. This is part of the UK's efforts to dismantle 'shadow financial systems' supporting Russia's war economy, which includes the Kremlin-backed A7 network.
The A7 network has been suspected of channeling funds and exploiting foreign banking systems to avoid restrictions. By targeting this network and other Russian-linked entities, the UK aims to cut off a key source of financing for Russia's military efforts in Ukraine.
