Argentine President Accused of $5 Million Cryptocurrency Deal
Investigations into the promotion of cryptocurrency project LIBRA have led to allegations that Argentine President Javier Mirei and his associates may have made a deal to receive $5 million in compensation.
The documents, recovered from a lobbyist's mobile phone, include payment agreements between President Mirei and LIBRA. One document, created on February 11, 2025, details a plan to pay him and his sister $2 million for consulting services related to blockchain and AI as part of a 'consulting contract.' This is part of an initial agreement that would see them receive a total of $5 million in compensation through three stages of payment.
The documents also reveal that multiple messages were exchanged between President Mirei and the lobbyist, Mauricio Novelli, around the time LIBRA was promoted on social media. It has been confirmed through digital forensic analysis that multiple calls took place between the two individuals shortly before and after the promotion, with some calls lasting up to several minutes.
These allegations have raised concerns about potential investment fraud, particularly given that the price of LIBRA surged 500 times in just 40 minutes following President Mirei's social media post. However, it then plummeted by 85% when the founder of LIBRA sold off his holdings, resulting in an estimated profit of approximately $87 million for operators at the expense of around 74,000 investors.
