Kyrgyz Crypto Exchange Hit with $13 Million Hack Amid Sanctions Row
A Kyrgyz-registered cryptocurrency exchange, Grinex, has been hit with a major hack resulting in the loss of over $13 million. The exchange, which facilitated transactions using a ruble-pegged cryptocurrency called A7A5, was previously sanctioned by US authorities for its role in enabling Russian entities to evade international financial restrictions.
A7A5 is widely used by Russian sanction busters to gain access to international currency markets. The cryptocurrency's growing accessibility and liquidity pose a challenge to international sanctions efforts, as it provides another tool for Russian entities to engage in cross-border transfers outside of the banking system.
