Bhutan's Bitcoin Reserves Plummet 70% Amid Strategic Shift
Bhutan has undergone a substantial reduction in its Bitcoin reserves over the past 18 months, with a significant portion of its stash sold off. According to data from Arkham, Bhutan's state entities have been transferring large sums of Bitcoin out of their wallets since late 2023.
The country's remaining 3,954 BTC are currently valued at approximately $280.6 million, indicating that over $215.7 million worth of BTC has been sold off in 2024 alone. This sharp decline in Bitcoin holdings suggests a shift in Bhutan's approach to digital assets, but the exact motivations behind this decision remain unclear.
The data also indicates that Bhutan may have paused or significantly scaled back its hydropower-backed Bitcoin mining operations, which were once a major contributor to its sovereign crypto reserves. This change signals a notable reset in the country's strategy for managing its digital assets.
