Pollak Exits Base Leadership Amid Shift to Payments and Trading Focus

Base creator Jesse Pollak has announced his departure from leading the app after taking responsibility for its failed social strategy. The move comes as Base redirects its attention towards payments, trading, and AI agents in response to increasing competition among crypto platforms.

Pollak admitted that his bet on an on-chain social economy had not driven crypto adoption as he expected. He noted that while builders did drive the next wave of adoption, seen in the growth of stablecoins, prediction markets, perp trading, and tokenization, social platforms failed to achieve widespread success.

Base launched the app in 2025 as a rebrand from its Coinbase Wallet into an 'everything app' combining social networking, trading, messaging, AI tools, and creator monetization. However, Pollak's focus on social products left the network struggling to catch up with competitors, causing people to lose confidence in the platform.

Pollak is stepping back to let Jordan Fish, also known as Cobie, take over his position. The network will now prioritize trading, payments, and AI agents. Base aims to become a blockchain powering global finance, which Pollak believes holds crypto's biggest opportunity.
