Coinbase Freezes $3M in Crypto Linked to Southeast Asian Scam Ring
Coinbase has made a significant move in the fight against cryptocurrency scams by freezing over $3 million in funds linked to a Southeast Asian fraud organization. The action is part of an international law enforcement operation, dubbed 'Disruption Week,' led by the U.S. Department of Justice's Scam Center Strike Force.
The operation involved a multi-agency collaboration between private-sector technology companies and law enforcement agencies from around the world, including the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Secret Service, and authorities from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Thailand.
Through this joint effort, authorities blocked over 1.4 million social media and email accounts believed to be used in the scam operation. Thai police have also arrested a suspect in connection with the case, although details about the individual's identity and specific charges remain limited at this time.
The freeze represents one of the largest coordinated actions by a U.S.-based exchange in response to organized fraud originating from Southeast Asia. This move highlights the growing ability of exchanges and law enforcement to trace and freeze assets linked to criminal activity, even when those funds cross multiple jurisdictions.
