Russia Sanctions Teenage Researcher Over Crypto-Based Money Laundering Allegations

The Russian Foreign Ministry has taken an unusual step by adding a 17-year-old British student to its list of individuals banned from entering the country. Alexander Browder, the student in question, was sanctioned for writing a report that made allegations about Russia's use of cryptocurrency to evade Western sanctions.

Browder's report, which was published in March, claimed that a ruble-pegged stablecoin called A7A5 facilitated large-scale money laundering across borders without detection. The allegations, if substantiated, would represent one of the largest documented cases of state-level cryptocurrency-based sanctions evasion.

Russia has sanctioned four other British citizens, although their identities have not been publicly disclosed. The move is consistent with Russia's practice of using sanctions lists as a tool of diplomatic retaliation against individuals it deems hostile to its interests.
