Tennessee Enacts Ban on Bitcoin and Crypto ATMs Amid Growing Scam Concerns

The recent surge in cryptocurrency scams has prompted several states to take action, with Tennessee being the latest to enact a ban on Bitcoin and crypto ATMs. The legislation, which takes effect on July 1, 2023, aims to prevent scams targeting elderly citizens.

According to reports, the FBI has identified Bitcoin ATMs as a primary means through which fraud against seniors is perpetrated. In 2022 alone, individuals over 60 years old lost approximately $257 million due to scams linked to Bitcoin ATMs, marking a staggering 58% increase from the previous year.

Tennessee's ban on crypto ATMs has been largely attributed to the increasing cases of scams targeting elderly citizens. The law, designated as House Bill 2505, criminalizes the ownership and operation of Bitcoin ATMs in the state, classifying violations as a Class A misdemeanor.

The impact of this legislation will be felt by Tennessee residents, particularly those living in Nashville where around 651 crypto ATMs are concentrated. Co-sponsor Cameron Sexton highlighted the dangers associated with these kiosks, stating that they have become a 'gateway for scammers to exploit Tennesseans, especially our seniors.'
