Circle Under Scrutiny After Drift Hack Highlights Tension Between Speed and Legal Risk
A recent hack of the Drift protocol has left many in the crypto community questioning Circle's response.
On Wednesday, an attacker exploited the protocol, siphoning off roughly $71 million in USDC. The hacker then used Circle's cross-chain transfer protocol (CCTP) to bridge about $232 million in USDC from Solana to Ethereum, making recovery efforts more difficult.
Critics argue that Circle could have acted faster to limit the damage by freezing assets tied to the exploit. However, doing so without legal authorization carries significant legal risks and requires a nuanced approach.
