IAEA Gains Access to Iranian Nuclear Sites Amid Crypto Sanctions

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has gained access to Iran's nuclear sites after an interim peace deal was reached between the United States and Iran. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed that the agency would resume inspections under a new memorandum of understanding, which was signed on June 23, 2026.

The agreement marks a significant development in the region, as it allows for international monitors to return to enrichment facilities that were previously closed off following military strikes in 2025. Grossi emphasized that the deal is an interim framework, not a finalized agreement, and that full enforcement of the terms depends on reaching a finalized agreement down the road.

The US Treasury had sanctioned Nobitex, Iran's largest crypto exchange, just weeks before the diplomatic announcements. The sanction means that US persons and entities are prohibited from transacting with the platform, which had operated as a primary on-ramp for Iranian users trying to access digital assets in an economy already squeezed by decades of sanctions.
