UK Introduces Blockchain-Based Water Credits System
The UK has taken a significant step towards promoting sustainable water management with the launch of its first blockchain-based water credits system. Developed by Hypercube and YTL Corporation in partnership, the initiative converts treated wastewater into digital credits that support environmentally-friendly strategies.
The system, which is built on the Algorand blockchain, uses Hypercube's WTR standard to verify the credentials of each credit generated from recycled water. This ensures transparency and accountability throughout the process.
By tokenising digital credits based on wastewater treatment, businesses can purchase them to offset their water usage, thereby supporting sustainable practices and contributing to environmental resilience. The system also enables real-time tracking and verification of water reuse, allowing for more efficient management of this valuable resource.
