Southeast Asia Scam Networks Targeted in Multinational Crackdown

A coordinated effort between Meta, law enforcement agencies, and tech companies has resulted in a significant crackdown on scam networks in Southeast Asia.

The operation, which began on May 18, involved the FBI, DOJ, Royal Thai Police, Microsoft, Coinbase, Starlink, and other agencies. It targeted scam centers accused of stealing from victims through romance scams, crypto investment fraud, and other online schemes.

Authorities have arrested 63 people allegedly connected to scam centers and frozen over $3 million in cryptocurrency tied to criminal networks. Meta removed approximately 1.4 million scam-related accounts, pages, and groups from Facebook and Instagram, while Microsoft disabled around 20,000 accounts linked to scam operations.

The operation focused on dismantling the infrastructure behind industrial-scale fraud, including compounds operated by transnational organized crime groups. These compounds often force victims to carry out online fraud, and authorities have warned that many Southeast Asian scam centers operate from these locations.
