Crypto Legislation Hits Roadblock Over Law Enforcement Concerns
A contentious issue is emerging as a major hurdle for legislation aimed at legitimizing the cryptocurrency industry.
The problem centers on a provision that would exempt non-custodial software developers from being treated as money transmitters under existing law. Law enforcement agencies have expressed concerns that this exemption could allow digital assets to be used for illicit activities, while some Republicans and industry representatives argue that the current law is too broad and has been misapplied.
Senators are now grappling with how to address these competing interests in order to move the bill forward. Democrats, including Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, are pushing for changes to address law enforcement concerns, while Republicans and industry groups are advocating for preserving the current language.
