Clay County Residents Warned of Bitcoin Scam after Elderly Man Loses $10,000
The Clay County Sheriff's Office has issued a public warning after a local resident fell victim to a bitcoin scam. According to authorities, an elderly man received a phone call from an unknown number claiming his bank account had been compromised.
The caller instructed the victim to withdraw large sums of money from his bank account and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM in Liberty. The scammers allegedly claimed that the person who stole the victim's information might be working for the bank, and instructed him not to say anything or hang up.
Despite only being able to withdraw $10,000 at one bank, the victim was told by the scammers to go to another bank in Gladstone to get the remaining cash. However, he did not comply with this request. The scammers then instructed the victim to deposit the $10,000 into a Bitcoin ATM.
At this time, investigators are working to recover the funds and warn that once deposited into these ATMs, withdrawing cash can be extremely difficult. If you receive a similar call claiming to have access to your account, authorities advise against engaging with the caller and instead report the incident to the sheriff's office.
