Irish Authorities Unlock Millions in Stolen Bitcoin

Irish law enforcement agencies have successfully recovered a significant amount of cryptocurrency tied to a long-running drug trafficking investigation.

The latest development comes after authorities obtained access to another Bitcoin wallet linked to convicted trafficker Clifton Collins. The newly recovered wallet contains approximately 500 BTC, valued at around $38.7 million based on current market prices.

Collins allegedly purchased the Bitcoin between late 2011 and early 2012 using proceeds from cannabis trafficking operations. At that time, Bitcoin traded below $10 across several exchanges, making the significant growth in value over the years even more remarkable.

The recovery highlights the importance of public blockchain networks providing transparent records for investigators to monitor, even after extended periods of inactivity. Europol's European Cybercrime Centre provided technical expertise that assisted Irish authorities in regaining access to the wallet, underscoring the collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies worldwide in tackling crypto-related crimes.
