Artist Creates Massive Oil Painting Representing 21 Million Bitcoins
Artist Anik Malcolm has been working on a project that combines art and mathematics, representing the 21 million bitcoins in existence through a massive oil painting. The painting, titled 'The Whole Entire Universe', features beads, each one hand-painted to represent an individual bitcoin. This is not just a visual representation but also mirrors the halving mechanism of Bitcoin's protocol.
The project began with a simple question: how to make an artwork that shows 21 million of something. Anik Malcolm, along with his wife Una, started working on the concept in early 2025. They discovered mathematical coincidences and patterns within the number, which led them to create a cube structure using beads. The cube's dimensions are 64x64, 32x32, 16x16, 8x8, 4x4, and 2x2, mirroring the halving mechanism of Bitcoin.
The oil painting took over 900 hours to complete, with each bead representing an individual bitcoin. The painting is part of the BMAG art gallery at Bitcoin 2026, where it will be displayed alongside other artworks and collectibles. The exhibition aims to showcase the intersection of art and technology, highlighting the beauty and significance of mathematical patterns.
