Sharia Law Bans Crypto Purchases: Mufti Taqi Usmani Issues Fatwa

Renowned Islamic scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani has issued a fatwa declaring that purchasing goods using cryptocurrency is 'impermissible' under Sharia law. The ruling, dated June 10, 2026, was signed by six prominent scholars and drew on various references from established works of Islamic jurisprudence to support its conclusions.

The fatwa stated that cryptocurrency does not qualify as 'wealth' under Sharia and is instead considered a recording of fictitious numbers in an account. As such, it is not permissible for individuals to use or sell goods purchased using cryptocurrency.

According to the ruling, buyers who have used cryptocurrency to purchase goods must return them to the seller. The fatwa also applies to digital products, including educational courses, and requires individuals to delete any materials related to these products from their devices and files.
