Aptos Explores Usage-Based Token Model with Decibel Initiative
Aptos is exploring a new tokenomics model that ties the retirement of APT tokens to on-chain activity. The 'Decibel' initiative aims to create a stronger link between usage and value by routing revenue towards burn. This approach has been successful in other blockchain ecosystems, such as Ethereum's EIP-1559.
The Decibel initiative could take several forms, including a protocol-level base-fee burn, app-level buyback-and-burn, or an ecosystem burn pool. Each of these options has its pros and cons, and the right choice will depend on Aptos governance appetite, validator alignment, and developer willingness to contribute revenue.
To succeed, the Decibel initiative must be carefully designed and governed to avoid reflexivity traps, validator undercompensation, and liquidity shocks. The effectiveness of the model will also depend on sustained fee capture or app revenues, careful protection of validator economics, and transparent, auditable execution.
