Huione Group Leader Extradited to China Over Crypto Laundering Allegations
Chinese authorities have made a major breakthrough in their efforts to combat crypto-related crime with the extradition of Li Xiong, the former head of the Huione Group. The group is accused of laundering over $89 billion in cryptoassets linked to illicit activities, including 'pig butchering' scams.
The Huione Group, also known as the Chen Zhi criminal syndicate, has been a major player in the global underworld of crypto-related crime. With Li Xiong's extradition, the group is facing significant scrutiny and pressure from international authorities.
According to reports, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) seized over $15 billion in Bitcoin linked to the Huione Group, while the U.S. Treasury blacklisted Huione accounts. This move highlights the growing cooperation between China, Cambodia, and the U.S. in tackling crypto-related crime.
