Manitoba Cryptocurrency Laws Could Force Companies Out of Business
The Manitoba government is proposing new laws that could have a significant impact on the province's cryptocurrency mining industry. Two companies, Gator Mining and another from the Arborg area, have expressed concerns that the changes would drive them out of business.
Gator Mining's Guildo Theriault testified before a legislature committee, stating that his company will go bankrupt if the government implements its plan. The proposed laws include increasing electricity rates for cryptocurrency operations by up to 100% and allowing Crown-owned Manitoba Hydro to temporarily reduce power during peak times.
The companies argue that these changes would be devastating to their businesses, leading to job losses and a reduction in property tax revenue for municipalities. Finance Minister Adrien Sala has stated that the changes are necessary due to the perceived low economic value of cryptocurrency mines, despite using substantial amounts of electricity.
