OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Models Send Shivers Through Crypto Market with Familiar Names

OpenAI's latest announcement has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency market. The company unveiled three new GPT-5.6 models, named Sol, Terra, and Luna, which bear striking resemblance to popular crypto projects Solana (SOL) and Terra (LUNA).

The names of the models have sparked excitement among social media users, who quickly pointed out the similarities with the well-known digital assets. OpenAI explained that the names were chosen to convey different levels of capability, but not linked to cryptocurrencies.

The GPT-5.6 family includes Sol, a flagship model; Terra, a balanced model for everyday work; and Luna, an entry-level, high-speed, low-cost offering. The models boast enhanced coding, scientific, and cybersecurity skills compared to their predecessors. OpenAI has also introduced new 'max' and 'ultra' modes on Sol for more challenging reasoning and agentic workflows.

The limited preview of the GPT-5.6 series comes after the White House reportedly asked to restrict the rollout. OpenAI emphasized that the launch is not a complete public release, but rather a safety test before making it available to a wider audience.
