Argentina Blocks Polymarket Amid Regulatory Concerns
Argentina has taken a significant step in regulating prediction markets by ordering a nationwide block of Polymarket, a popular online platform.
The decision was made after a regulatory probe and complaints from local gaming bodies, which cited concerns over unlicensed online betting activity. The authorities have highlighted the risks associated with crypto payments, credit card deposits, and the lack of robust age or identity verification checks on the platform.
Polymarket has faced scrutiny globally, with several countries and states taking action against it for operating as an unauthorized gambling platform. In Argentina, the authorities have also raised concerns about the platform's handling of sensitive events, including its reversal of predictions related to Argentina's inflation rate of 2.9% before the official release.
The block on Polymarket is expected to be enforced by telecom regulator ENACOM, while Google and Apple have been ordered to remove the app from their stores. This decision follows similar actions taken by countries such as Colombia and Romania, which have banned the platform for operating as an unauthorized gambling activity within their jurisdictions.
