x402 Protocol Processes $50M in Payments as OpenRouter Adopts Infrastructure

The x402 protocol has been gaining traction in the crypto payments space, with over $50M in USDC payments processed to date. This infrastructure is designed specifically for high-frequency, low-value transactions that traditional payment rails struggle to handle efficiently.

One notable example of adoption is OpenRouter, a leading AI model aggregator, which is transitioning its operations to use the x402 protocol for settlement purposes. By leveraging the x402 protocol's pay-per-use crypto settlement model, OpenRouter can simplify its billing and collection processes, reducing costs and increasing efficiency.

The x402 protocol itself takes advantage of the dormant HTTP 402 'Payment Required' status code to create a native payment layer for the internet. When an AI agent attempts to access an API endpoint that incurs a cost, the server responds with a 402 status code along with payment instructions. This eliminates the need for subscriptions, human-verified payments, or API keys tied to credit cards.
