Coinbase's Grewal Exits Amid Ongoing Crypto Regulatory Fight
Coinbase's Chief Legal Officer, Paul Grewal, is leaving the company on July 31 after six years of service. He will join an undisclosed startup and maintain an advisory capacity with Coinbase.
Grewal has guided Coinbase through significant legal challenges, including a 2023 enforcement action by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The agency claimed Coinbase was functioning as an unregistered broker, clearinghouse, and securities exchange, but ultimately withdrew its case after President Donald Trump's return to the White House.
Coinbase has been actively lobbying for the passage of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, also known as the CLARITY Act. This legislation would transfer digital asset regulatory authority from the SEC to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The United States Senate is expected to reconvene on Monday and may consider voting on the CLARITY Act.
