Iran Unveils Blockchain-Based Maritime Insurance System
Iran has taken a significant step towards reducing its reliance on traditional financial systems by introducing a blockchain-based maritime insurance system.
Hormuz Safe, as it is called, enables shipping companies to pay premiums using cryptocurrencies, bypassing the need for dollar-denominated transactions.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, handling around one-fifth of the world's oil consumption.
By offering a crypto-based alternative, Iran aims to address the longstanding concern of insurance coverage for vessels transiting the waterway, particularly in light of tensions with Western powers.
The initiative leverages blockchain technology to process transactions, making it more efficient and secure than traditional methods.
