Crypto Laundering Case Highlights Increased Prosecution of Mid-Level Participants
A recent court ruling has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency community, emphasizing the severity of punishments for those involved in illicit activities.
22-year-old Evan Tangeman was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for laundering $3.5 million on behalf of a cybercriminal syndicate that stole over $263 million in cryptocurrency. This case marks a significant shift in the prosecution of mid-level participants in crypto-enabled crime, as authorities aim to send a strong deterrent signal.
The syndicate operated from at least October 2023 to May 2025, using hacking and social engineering tactics to steal cryptocurrency from victims across the country. Tangeman's role was to convert stolen crypto into usable cash, funding the group's lavish lifestyle.
