Cambodia Cracks Down on Cyber Crimes with Harsh Penalties

Cambodia has taken a significant step towards tackling cyber crimes with the passage of a new law targeting scam operations. The law imposes harsh penalties on scam bosses, including prison terms ranging from 15 to 30 years or life imprisonment for those responsible for deaths or violence.

The law aims to eradicate all scam centers in the country by April, as part of a push to shut down scam compounds that have been driving billions in global fraud. Scam networks operating in Southeast Asia rely heavily on cryptocurrency for cross-border movement and laundering.

Experts warn that the crackdown may displace the industry rather than destroy it, as scam operations are highly portable and can quickly move people, scripts, and infrastructure across borders.
