Banca Sella First Italian Bank to Receive MiCA Approval for Cryptocurrency Services

Banca Sella Receives MiCA Approval for Cryptocurrency Services in Italy

Banca Sella has become the first Italian bank to receive approval from the Bank of Italy to offer cryptocurrency services under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, or MiCA. The lender plans to launch digital-asset custody, transfer, and receipt services for a limited group of corporate clients later this year.

With approximately 50 billion euros in assets under management and over 3.1 million customers, Banca Sella is well-positioned to provide these services to its client base. The bank has completed the formal 40-day notification process required under the MiCA framework, which allows it to operate as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP).

The CASP approval will enable Banca Sella to offer digital-asset custody, transfer, and receipt solutions for selected client groups in 2026. The bank has partnered with blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis for compliance support and has developed its internal digital-asset infrastructure using Fireblocks.
