Bitcoin Vulnerability: 6 Million Coins at Risk from Quantum Computing Threats
A recent study by Glassnode has shed light on the threat posed by Quantum Computing to the Bitcoin network. According to the analysis, approximately 6.04 million Bitcoin, or over 30% of the total supply, is at risk due to these emerging computers' ability to break advanced cryptographic systems.
The majority of the vulnerable coins, around 4.12 million BTC, are operationally exposed. This means that while they were initially protected, their public keys have become visible through address reuse, partial spending, or custody behavior. The remaining 1.92 million BTC are structurally exposed due to outdated wallet standards.
As Glassnode's analysis shows, the number of operationally exposed coins has increased in recent years, highlighting the need for addressing this issue to prevent potential attacks.
