Ronin to Abandon Sidechain for Ethereum Layer 2 Upgrade

Ronin, the blockchain used by gaming platform Axie Infinity, has announced its plans to transition from its independent sidechain to an Ethereum layer 2 protocol.

This move is aimed at improving security while maintaining high throughput. The current sidechain setup was criticized after a major exploit in May 2022, which remains one of the largest DeFi bridge exploits in history.

The transition will result in a temporary downtime of about 10 hours on May 12, during which all network transactions and smart contract interactions will be paused.
