Iran Collects Crypto Payments at Strait of Hormuz Shipping Route
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route, has become a hub for cryptocurrency transactions as Iran collects millions of dollars in digital payments from passing tankers. The state-backed system allows the country to bypass dollar-based banking and potential sanctions constraints.
A recent surge in tanker traffic through the strait has seen an estimated $36 million generated in a single day, with 15-18 ships paying $2 million each in Chinese yuan or stablecoins. This marks one of the highest volumes of traffic since March 1st.
