BitGo CEO Sounds Alarm: Bitcoin's Cryptography Has an Expiration Date

Mike Belshe, CEO of BitGo, recently spoke at the BFC in NYC symposium, where he highlighted the urgent need for Bitcoin to transition to quantum-resistant cryptography. With around 250 institutional decision-makers in attendance, Belshe emphasized that elliptic curve cryptography, which underpins Bitcoin's security, is vulnerable to being broken by a powerful quantum computer. This could potentially happen sooner rather than later.

The proposal to address this issue, known as BIP-361, proposes a gradual migration plan for moving Bitcoin to new, quantum-resistant signature schemes. Rather than requiring an immediate overhaul, it would allow these alternatives to coexist with current cryptographic methods before eventually replacing them.

BitGo has already made progress in this area by executing the first quantum-resistant transaction on the Ethereum testnet. This milestone was achieved prior to Belshe's speech at the symposium.
