Coinbase Expands Australian Presence with New Financial Services License
Coinbase has made a significant move in the Australian market by securing an Australian Financial Services License through its local entity. The license allows the exchange to offer retail derivatives trading in Australia, including crypto and equity perpetuals.
The approval is part of Coinbase's regional expansion plans, which include adding futures, options, and other financial products later. With the license, Coinbase must meet conduct, disclosure, governance, and consumer protection requirements, similar to traditional financial services providers.
Coinbase's regional managing director for Asia-Pacific, John O'Loghlen, stated that the exchange plans to compete with traditional financial services on stock trading, payments, and other TradFi products using the speed and execution of crypto. This move reflects broader efforts by crypto firms to integrate digital assets into regulated financial markets.
