North Korean hackers blamed for $300m cryptocurrency heist
A major cryptocurrency heist has been attributed to North Korea, with an affected party revealing that nearly $300 million in cryptocurrency was stolen over the weekend.
The theft is believed to have been carried out by a highly-sophisticated hacking group, likely the DPRK's Lazarus Group, which has been linked to several high-profile cyber attacks in recent years.
The affected party, KelpDAO, said that two blockchain servers hosted by another crypto tech application called LayerZero were compromised during the hack, allowing a cryptocurrency token linked to Ethereum to be drained from their vault.
The incident is the largest known crypto heist this year and highlights the ongoing threat posed by state-sponsored cybercrime programs, which use stolen cryptocurrency to fund illicit activities such as nuclear weapons development.
