Government Review Sparks Calls for Stricter Crypto Donations Controls
A new report on foreign financial influence has sparked calls for stricter controls on crypto donations to British political parties. The review, led by former Home Secretary Philip Rycroft, found that illicit finance poses a significant threat to democracy.
According to the report, countries such as Iran, Russia, and China are attempting to infiltrate UK politics through financial means. To combat this, Sir Keir Starmer has announced a temporary ban on cryptocurrency donations, which will affect parties like Reform UK.
The move follows a £12m donation from British investor Christopher Harborne to Reform UK in the past year. The party has also received smaller crypto donations from overseas sources. Reform UK's leadership has defended these donations, but critics argue they pose a risk to democratic processes.
