Senators to Oversee DOJ Investigation into Binance's Iran-Linked Transactions
The Justice Department's investigation into Binance's potential involvement in sanctions evasion linked to Iran has taken a new turn. Three Democratic senators have announced that they will be overseeing the probe, which is examining over $1 billion in crypto transfers through the exchange.
According to reports, investigators are looking at whether Binance allowed transactions linked to Iranian entities to move through its platform, potentially evading U.S. sanctions. The senators involved - Elizabeth Warren, Chris Van Hollen, and Ruben Gallego - have expressed concerns about the company's past behavior, citing an 'established track record' of prioritizing profits over compliance with regulations.
Binance has cooperated with law enforcement in the past, shutting down accounts linked to sanctioned transactions. However, the senators remain skeptical, pointing out that the exchange has a history of pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable. The latest scrutiny follows Binance's guilty plea in 2023 for violating anti-money laundering and sanctions laws, which resulted in a record $4.3 billion fine.
