Vlad Tenev Urges Passage of CLARITY Act to Allow Stablecoin Yield
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has called on US lawmakers to pass the CLARITY Act, which would enable stablecoins to offer both value and safety by allowing users to earn yield. According to Tenev, this move is crucial for unlocking new growth in the industry and making stablecoins a more competitive option with traditional finance.
The CLARITY Act aims to provide regulatory clarity on how stablecoins should operate in the US. Currently, most stablecoins do not offer users any returns, creating a gap between traditional savings accounts and crypto assets. Tenev believes that by allowing users to earn yield on their stablecoin holdings, they can make more informed financial decisions and avoid having to move funds back and forth.
Some banks have expressed concerns that stablecoins could pull money away from deposits if they offer yield. However, Tenev argues that most stablecoin reserves already sit within the banking system, so the money doesn't actually leave the financial structure. He also points out that money market funds manage over $8 trillion in assets and still work well within the system.
While some experts argue that yield always comes with risk, Tenev believes that stablecoins can be designed to minimize this risk. The debate over the CLARITY Act is ongoing, with lawmakers working on possible changes to the bill. If passed, it would provide regulatory certainty for the industry and unlock new growth opportunities.
