Taiwan Crypto Ringleader Sentenced to 22 Years for Massive BitShine Scam
Taiwan's Shilin District Court has handed down a significant sentence in a high-profile crypto case. Shih, the ringleader behind BitShine, was convicted of fraud, money laundering, and operating virtual asset services illegally.
The court sentenced Shih to 22 years in prison for orchestrating a massive operation that left over 1,500 people financially devastated. The victims lost more than NT$1.27 billion (approximately $39 million), with the broader laundering operation processing more than NT$2.3 billion ($71 million) between January 2024 and April 2025.
The case highlights how organized crime groups can exploit institutional trust by registering legitimate exchanges, only to use them as fronts for their operations. In this instance, BitShine was once a registered entity with Taiwan's Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC), giving it a veneer of legitimacy.
