Bitcoin Holder Recovers Cryptocurrency with Help from AI

A recent case has highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in recovering lost or forgotten cryptocurrency assets. In this instance, a Bitcoin holder successfully recovered 5 BTC from an 11-year-old locked wallet using Anthropic's Claude AI.

The owner of the wallet, who posted under the pseudonym cprkrn, had attempted to recover the funds through commercial services but was unsuccessful until turning to AI. He uploaded files from his old college computer to Claude, which then located an encrypted wallet file and used a widely used open-source recovery utility, btcrecover, to decrypt the keys.

The recovery is significant not only because of its value – the recovered 5 BTC are now worth around $400,000 given Bitcoin's current price – but also because it demonstrates the capabilities of general-purpose AI in handling specialized tasks such as cyber and debugging work.
