0x Unveils Pay-Per-Request Swap API for Autonomous Agents

0x Protocol has made its Swap API accessible to AI agents through a pay-per-request model that utilizes USDC, marking a significant step towards making crypto payments an invisible infrastructure for autonomous software.

This development lies at the intersection of two rapidly evolving themes: AI agents and crypto payments. Traditionally, companies would sign up for API keys and pay invoices, but 0x's new model enables agents to pay directly from their wallets, hinting at a larger shift in how software pays for services online.

The idea relies on the HTTP 402 'Payment Required' concept, which was long dormant. However, with the rise of stablecoins like USDC, developers can revisit this model by settling small payments programmatically and globally.

This application is straightforward in DeFi: an agent can pay a tiny fee in USDC per request for token quotes, routes, or swaps, reducing friction for builders who don't want enterprise contracts. This may also make API access more modular for bots, wallets, trading tools, and agentic workflows.
