East Texas Officials Move to Ban Crypto Kiosks Amid Surge in Elderly Scam Victims

East Texas officials are taking drastic measures to combat an escalating threat of cryptocurrency scams targeting seniors. In response to a surge in cases, Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith convened a regional meeting with lawmakers and law enforcement experts.

The surge in crypto kiosk scams has been particularly damaging to elderly residents, who have fallen victim to scammers claiming to be sheriff's office employees or offering fake emergency assistance.

According to local resident Tammy Humes, scammers often use convincing tactics, such as claiming a family member is in distress and needs immediate financial assistance. In one recent case, a Georgia inmate orchestrated a scam that resulted in an elderly woman losing $13,000.

To combat this growing threat, officials have agreed to push for legislation to ban cash-to-crypto kiosks altogether, which are seen as conduits for fraudsters to drain victims' savings.
