Coinbase Empowers AI Agents to Manage Trading and Payment Pathways

Coinbase has launched 'Coinbase for Agents', a tool that allows AI agents to manage trading and payment pathways. Initially, the tool will enable agent-based AI workflows, such as those from ChatGPT or Claude, to execute cryptocurrency transactions using natural language instructions.

For example, customers can prompt their agents to rebalance investment portfolios, identify quantitatively driven technical trading opportunities, implement tactical strategies, and manage positions over time. The tool aims to extend these capabilities to encompass equities and prediction markets more broadly.

Coinbase's x402 protocol is positioned as an internet-native payment standard that supports stablecoin payments initiated directly via HTTP. This enables APIs, applications, and AI agents to automate micropayments and instant machine-to-machine settlements.
